Techniques we teach
Active cycle of breathing technique (ACBT)
A cycle of relaxed breathing control, deep breaths and huffs (forced expirations) that moves sputum from the smaller airways up to where it can be cleared easily. It is effective and needs no equipment.
Deep breathing (thoracic expansion) exercises
Slow, deep breaths that get air behind secretions in the lower lungs and help re-expand lung tissue, useful after surgery, pneumonia and in chronic lung disease.
Autogenic drainage and positioning
Breathing at different lung volumes, sometimes combined with positions that help drainage from particular areas of the lungs.
Percussion
A rhythmic clapping on the chest wall with a cupped hand to loosen secretions, used with other techniques where helpful.
PEP and oscillating PEP devices
Positive expiratory pressure (PEP) devices add gentle resistance when you breathe out, which holds the airways open and helps air get behind the sputum. Oscillating devices such as the Acapella, Aerobika, Flutter and AirPhysio also add vibration to loosen mucus. We let you try devices in clinic, show you how to use and clean them, and stock them for purchase.
Who benefits?
Bronchiectasis, cystic fibrosis, COPD, chronic bronchitis, after pneumonia and after surgery, as well as anyone who has trouble clearing sputum.
