What is chronic bronchitis?
Chronic bronchitis is long-term inflammation of the airways with a cough that produces sputum on most days for at least three months of the year, over two years in a row. It is commonly part of COPD.
How respiratory physiotherapy helps
- Airway clearance techniques such as ACBT and huffing, which clear mucus with less effort than repeated coughing.
- Trialling a PEP or oscillating PEP device to loosen sputum.
- Manual techniques such as percussion where helpful.
- Exercise and pulmonary rehabilitation to build fitness and help mobilise secretions.
