Inspiratory Muscle Training

Like any muscle, the diaphragm and other breathing muscles can be trained. A structured IMT program can reduce breathlessness in some lung conditions and improve performance in sport.

What is inspiratory muscle training?

IMT uses a small hand-held device that adds resistance when you breathe in. Training against that resistance for a few minutes a day, over several weeks, strengthens the breathing muscles.

Who might benefit?

  • People with COPD and other lung conditions who have weak breathing muscles.
  • Preparation before lung or abdominal surgery.
  • Recovery after illness, including long COVID.
  • Athletes and active people wanting to delay breathlessness under load.

How we set it up

We assess whether IMT suits you, choose the right device, set the starting resistance, teach correct technique and progress your program at follow-up visits.

No referral needed to book. Medicare GPCCMP, DVA, NDIS and HICAPS accepted. See fees.
