What is bronchiectasis?
Bronchiectasis is a permanent widening of parts of the airways. The damaged airways don't clear mucus well, so sputum builds up and infections become more frequent. Each infection causes more inflammation, which can lead to more damage. Breaking this cycle is the goal of treatment.
How respiratory physiotherapy helps
- Airway clearance technique: the active cycle of breathing technique (ACBT), huffing, autogenic drainage and positioning, matched to your chest.
- Device selection: trying PEP and oscillating PEP devices (such as Acapella, Aerobika or Flutter) in clinic, so you know which suits you before you buy.
- Nebuliser routines: timing hypertonic saline and other prescribed nebulisers around your clearance.
- Exercise: physical activity helps move mucus and builds fitness. Pulmonary rehabilitation is recommended for people with bronchiectasis who are breathless.
- Infection plans: stepping up your clearance when your chest is worse.
We recommend a review at least once a year, or sooner after a flare-up, to check your technique and update your program.
