Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)

COPD is a long-term lung condition, but how you feel day to day can change a lot with the right exercise and breathing strategies. We help you stay active, recover from flare-ups and feel more in control of your breathing.

What is COPD?

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is an umbrella term for long-term lung conditions that narrow the airways and make it harder to breathe out fully. It usually includes features of chronic bronchitis and emphysema, and sometimes asthma. Common symptoms are breathlessness on exertion, a persistent cough and difficulty clearing sputum.

COPD can't be reversed, but it can be well managed. Alongside medication from your GP or respiratory specialist, pulmonary rehabilitation has strong research evidence for improving exercise capacity, breathlessness and quality of life.

How respiratory physiotherapy helps

  • Pulmonary rehabilitation: supervised exercise to build endurance and strength, in our small-group classes or one-on-one.
  • Breathlessness management: breathing control, recovery positions, pacing and energy-saving strategies you can use at home and when out.
  • Airway clearance: techniques such as the active cycle of breathing and, where helpful, a PEP or oscillating PEP device to shift sputum.
  • Inspiratory muscle training: a strengthening program for your breathing muscles, which can reduce breathlessness for some people.
  • Flare-up plans: what to do when your chest is worse, and how to rebuild after a hospital stay.

What to expect at your first visit

Your initial appointment includes a detailed assessment of your breathing, chest, exercise tolerance and daily activities. We then agree on goals with you and give you a practical plan, usually a combination of clinic sessions, a home program and, if suitable, our pulmonary rehabilitation classes.

Frequently asked questions

Can I claim physiotherapy for COPD on Medicare?

Yes, if your GP puts you on a GP Chronic Condition Management Plan (GPCCMP) and refers you to us. You then pay a gap fee after the Medicare rebate. See our Fees page for current amounts.

Is exercise safe if I get very breathless?

Breathlessness during exercise is expected with COPD and is not harmful in itself. We assess you first, monitor your oxygen levels and heart rate, and build up gradually at a level that suits you.

Do I need a referral?

No. You can book directly. A GP referral is only needed if you want to use a Medicare GPCCMP rebate.
